5 common door problems and what usually causes them

Most door troubles come down to a handful of causes. Here are five of the most common and what is usually going on.

1. The door sticks or drags

Often a loose or dropped hinge, or a door that has swollen with humidity. Tightening or adjusting the hinges fixes many cases.

2. It will not latch

Usually the latch and strike plate no longer line up because the door or frame has shifted. Realigning the strike normally sorts it.

3. Drafts around the edges

Worn weatherstripping is the usual culprit, and it is an easy, inexpensive replacement.

4. A loose or sticking lock

Locks wear out. A sticking or loose lock is worth fixing promptly — it is also a security issue.

5. Squeaky or sagging hinges

Hinges loosen over time. Re-securing or replacing them keeps the door hanging straight.
