Garage door springs and cables: warning signs to watch for

Torsion spring, steel shaft and cable drum above a residential garage door

The springs and cables are what make a heavy garage door easy to lift. When they start to fail, you will usually get some warning.

Signs to watch for

  • The door suddenly feels very heavy or will not stay open
  • A loud bang came from the garage
  • A visible gap in a spring, or a loose or frayed cable
  • The door opens crooked or drops quickly

Why it is not a DIY job

Torsion springs are wound under high tension and can cause serious injury if handled without the right tools and training. This is one to leave to a technician.

If you have spotted any of these signs, stop using the door and call us — keep people and vehicles clear until it is fixed.
