Why your garage door won’t open: common causes

Ceiling-mounted opener and rail above a closed sectional garage door

When a garage door refuses to open, it is frustrating — but the cause is usually one of a few things.

Power and the opener

Check that the opener has power and the remote has working batteries. If the motor runs but the door does not move, the trolley may be disconnected or the opener gear worn.

A broken spring

If the door is suddenly far too heavy to lift and will not budge, a torsion spring may have broken. Springs are under high tension — this is not a DIY fix.

Blocked safety sensors

Most doors will not close (and sometimes behave oddly) if the safety sensors near the floor are misaligned or blocked. Clearing and realigning them often helps.

Off the track

A door that has jumped its track or has bent rollers will bind. Do not force it.

If it is more than a quick check, give us a call — garage doors are heavy and under tension, so some repairs are best left to a technician.
